Trauma & Addiction

How do Trauma and Addiction connect?

The large majority of patients with addiction also have a history of trauma. The traumatic events often leave individuals feeling a need to self-medicate with substances in order to alleviate symptoms. Using substances can increase the vulnerability to experiencing traumatic events. Many individuals grew up in environments that involved both substance use and trauma. Addiction has become a way to cope with the traumas experienced.
